Oscar Kightley is a Samoan born writer/actor and director who grew up in New Zealand and who has helped create critically acclaimed award-winning work for the stage, small and big screens.
The movie he co-wrote and starred in, Sione’s Wedding, broke domestic box office records on its release in 2006. The follow up sequel released in 2012 enjoyed similar success.
From 2005 to 2009 he wrote and performed in Bro Town, a prime time animated comedy series that earned a massive following, screening around the world.
In 2009 he was made a New Zealand Arts Foundation Arts Laureate. The same year he was given a medal from the Queen in recognition of services to New Zealand theatre and television.
In 2013 he helped write and direct comedy television series Super City II, which was awesome. His first short film, Tom’s Dairy got love from film festivals including the top prize in Belize!
That year he co-wrote and played the lead in the gritty drama Harry, which received rave reviews in New Zealand and in the United States.
In 2016 you will have seen Oscar on the silver screen in the award winning Hunt for the Wilderpeople playing the none-to-bright cop Andy.
More recently you will have heard Oscar’s distinctive voice in the Disney hit Moana where Oscar voiced the part of Fisherman.
Oscar is part of The Naked Samoans who are a comedy troupe that have worked on stage and screen for seventeen years now. They have a following in New Zealand, Australia and the US. They starred in the Sione’s Wedding movies, five seasons of cartoon Bro Town and TV comedy Radiradirah.
